Technical University Munich operates the high flux Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) located at the science campus in Garching, Germany. The neutron source itself, its research instruments as well as the irradiation facilities provide unique possibilities for the scientific and industrial use of neutron beams.
For a scientific project on the modeling and characterization of high-brilliance neutron sources, we invite applications for a PhD Postion (m/f/x).

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Neutron sources such as the FRM II make a fundamental contribution to both applied and basic research. The unparalleled sensitivity of neutron beams to light elements, their deep penetration into condensed matter, and their unique ability to detect magnetism make neutrons an indispensable tool for addressing key scientific and technological challenges of our time, such as in the fields of sustainable energy, health and life sciences, climate protection, environmental conservation, and the circular economy.

This doctoral thesis focuses on the comprehensive modeling and characterization of the neutron flux of the FRM II neutron source, starting from nuclear fission in the fuel element and moderation in the moderator tank, through re-moderation in secondary sources, the neutron guide system, and finally to the individual instruments. Various Monte-Carlo simulation methods (Serpent, McStas) as well as detailed experimental measurements of flux, spectral flux distribution, and divergence distribution at different positions will be combined into a coherent model.

The doctoral thesis is being conducted as a joint project with the TUM Center for Nuclear Safety and Innovation.

Qualification and Experience:

  • You have a degree (Diploma, Master's) in physics, nuclear physics, radiochemistry, or a related field.
  • Ideally, you already have some experience in reactor physics and modeling. Experience in operating complex experimental setups and using data analysis tools (e.g., Python programming) is an advantage.
  • You enjoy working in an international team and have good communication skills. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

For more information, please contact Dr. Sebastian Mühlbauer (sebastian.muehbauer@frm2.tum.de) or Dr. Christian Reiter (christian.reiter@frm2.tum.de).

The high safety standard of our facility requires the reliability of the employees under nuclear law. Appropriate background checks are carried out for this purpose.

Perks:

We offer a flexible working time model including 30 days of paid leave of absence (vacation days) as well as an additional company pension scheme (VBL).

As employee of Technical University Munich you can also benefit from

  • TUM health programes and University sports
  • Language courses and other TUM-internal training opportunities
  • TUM childcare (subject to availability)
  • good accessibility with public transport

The TUM position is remunerated according to TV-L and is limited to 1.5 years.
Severely disabled people are given preference if they are essentially equally qualified. The TUM aims to increase the proportion of women. Applications from women are therefore expressly welcomed.
