Technical University Munich operates the high flux Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) located at the scientific campus in Garching, Germany. The neutron source itself, its research instruments as well as the irradiation facilities provide unique possibilities for the scientific and industrial use of neutron beams. In the field of neutron diffraction, we invite applications for a full time (40h / week) position as Instrument Scientist (m/f/d) for the commissioning, operation and further development of the high pressure instrument SAPHiR

Responsibilities

SAPHiR is an instrument for time-of-flight neutron diffraction and radiography under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. A cubic multi-anvil press with large area detectors at the research neutron source FRM II allows unique investigations in Earth and materials sciences. Applications include crystallography and phase relations of water-bearing high-pressure phases, equations-of-state under extreme conditions, synthesis and investigation of novel materials, and rheology at high pressure and temperature. The multi-anvil press is already in operation, the other components are being installed and detector commissioning and operation with neutrons will start shortly. Together with a team of scientists and technical personnel, your responsibilities include:

  • Commissioning and operation of the instrument with neutrons
  • Preparing and conducting high pressure experiments with and without neutrons
  • Implementation and development of data treatment procedures
  • Start of the scientific use of the instrument and its operation within the user programme of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ)
  • Scientific collaborations with researchers from academia and industry (from Germany and abroad)
  • Pursuit of your own scientific projects

Qualification and Experience

  • You have a degree in geosciences, physics, chemistry, materials science or related fields, ideally completed with a PhD / doctorate.
  • You are experienced in the application of diffraction methods (either neutron- based or other diffraction techniques) for the investigation of condensed matter.
  • Experience with high-pressure instrumentation and with software for instrument and data simulation (e.g. McStas, VITESS, MANTID) will be an asset.
  • Good communication skills in English and the ability to work in an international team are mandatory. Knowledge of German is an advantage.
